Add Strong Contrast

Another type and meaning related to adverb clauses is called strong contrast. It is like the difference between dogs and cats. Now this type is used for contrast papers because it means differences. It is often when describing charts and tables. By the way if you are going to write about charts like in the writing section of IELTS, you want to learn this grammar and how to apply it. So let's look at the chart and how to apply the chart for strong contrast.

Let's look again at a chart.

Fanboys Transitions Adv.Clauses Move a Transition Reducing Adv.Phrase/Other phrase

but, yet in contrast *while yes **no compared to/

on the other hand whereas in comparison to/with

in comtrast to/with

Please note the grammar of these other phrase:

1. First, compared to/in comparison to with noun who/which/that + verb

Example: Dogs like to be close to their owner but cats don't care if they are near their owner.

Delete the "but" and add compared to.

Then after the noun add who/which or that

Dogs like to be close to their owner compared to cats who don't care if they are near their owner.

2.Next, unlike + noun.

Example: Dogs like to be close to their owner but cats don't care if they are near their owner.

Delete "but" and add unlike.

Then after unlike put the noun from the first sentence that you are comparing and a comma.

Dogs like to be close to their owner unlike cats who don't care if they are near their owner.

*Usually when an adverb clause is at the end of a sentence, we don’t add a comma but for this structure we do to show that it means contrast and not time.

** Don’t usually reduce because the subjects are often different.

Now, let's apply the chart.

A.Girls typically like to talk about boys. Boys like to talk about sports.
